More than just rectangles that flank the windows, outdoor shutters are not only aesthetically pleasing—they are a timeless option with security, privacy, ventilation, and decoration in mind. Mounted Shutters or Functional Shutters?
Window shutters for the exterior of the home are no longer required to provide security or protect from the elements, though they are a great upgrade. The main purpose of functional shutters is that they rest on hinges that are attached to the window casing and can swing open or closed. Usually, exterior shutters are partnered with hardware like locks and securing mechanisms that add to the utility and look of the window treatment.
Many outdoor window shutters are nonfunctional—what we call “mounted shutters.” Mounted shutters may be styled exactly like a functional shutter with the same hardware—the only difference is, one swings open and closed while the mounted shutters remain in one location. Not every home or window casing is suited or built for functional shutters, and mounted shutters provide all the look of functional shutters with less worry and maintenance.
